The Month of Kislev

As the month of Kislev arrives, we think about the darkness of the earth and the brightness of the miracles of LIGHT that will surround us during the winter season.  Chanukah is not a major holiday in our tradition but it is often a holiday that unites families and friends.  An interesting fact is that Chanukah begins in the month of Kislev and ends in the month of Tevet.  It is the only Jewish holiday that bridges two Hebrew months.

(A Radko Ornament)

The sign of Kislev is a bowing arrow, the arc, which also represents the rainbow.  In Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah), the rainbow is a symbol of hope, peace, and renewal and signifies the covenant that Jews have with earthly and spiritual energies.  The rainbow reminds us to care for our magical world and to remember the miracles that are shared with us.

As we think about Chanukah and the miracle of light, take some time to reflect upon the miracles in your own life.  How have your miracles helped you live life to the fullest?  How have they helped you express kindness and love in the presence of your family and friends?  How have they helped you achieve personal or professional goals?

It would be a big miracle if everyone who received this e-mail could come to Paris from December 15th-17th, but I'm not sure that will happen.  But I do hope that you will read this and think about how much light and love and community you will feel if you join us.

"EuroJews in Paris" is less than one month away and it will be a blast!  I'll be leading a candle-making workshop, we will be screening a film, celebrating Shabbat with a delicious meal, and we'll meet new and old friends while enjoying the beauty of Paris!  Looking forward to seeing you!

In the midst of darkness, let us create light.

Shalom from Laura in Warsaw and Jordan in Boston
